Steering the wheel and with her focus divided between a strategic way out and the reunion they were having, Karen quiped back at Frank distractedly. "Sure, we can play that and waste about two hours with guessing games. Wait until someone spot you two in a car and see how that turns out." There wasn't malice in her voice, only a little challenge.
Frank could claim as much as he wanted that he kept his distance. But he was a steady presence, one which Karen knew she could put her trust on. If he got a new burner number, he would reach out to let her know. That is why she had not even hesitated before asking him for help. After hearing what had happened with Matt, she knew Castle was their best bet before they could regroup. Things had crossed a line and they needed to put an end to it.
As Kate felt the weight of Matt's head on her temple, she shifted slightly, adjusting her cheek agaist his shoulder. It felt good, the sort of relaxed closeness she needed. Simply knowing they were all right. Safe for a moment.
"It doesn't hurt," she mumbled, aware that he'd know she was lying. It didn't matter.
Karen briefly looked at them both in the back over thre rearview, her own heartbeat betraying something like Kate's did. "Traffic is crazy in certain areas, I had to avoid Midtown completely. But that's hardly surprising given what's going on." She didn't to clarify why. Or to ask how Matt was holding up. With both him and Frank, and apparently Kate too now, that was pointless.
Time to let them catch up.
"Every news channel is already discussing the possibilities of going into martial law. Fisk is going to milk everything he can about this situation. Reinforce his new laws, claim that this is an attack on the city itself."
